Nebari - Surface roots
What is Nebari and what does it do?
It is very important to pay attention to roots growing on the surface because they are one big part of bonsai art, and there is also a rule about them. These roots are used to make bonsai look older and to express the tree's toughness, strength, wildness, and the life and the history as if the tree would have been growing in the wild life.
Important Nebari rules
Surface roots - In bonsai art, these roots are called " Nebari " and the good nebari makes bonsai look stable, like they are holding onto the ground, and the best shape is when they grow in eight different directions.

Basic surface roots must grow in many different directions and must avoid to shape them :
1. crossing each other
2. bending too much
3. growing outward and then inward
Nebari for the trunk slanting to one side :
1. the roots must grow to the opposite side of the trunk slanting to. ( A )
2. the roots must be shorter on the side the trunk is slanting to. ( B )
